My nose is better than yours
Can you smell that hint
of coffee, leather, blueberry, liquorice inside that glass?
.... yes madam ...
(silence)
... but ... what is blueberry and liquorice?"
It is hard to get a No as an answer in Cambodia and in Asia in general. As if, by saying NO, they would loose face and fail you.
While we appreciate that effort, I have to admit that it does not always help.
"Sopheap, don't worry if you dont know what a blueberry is, just close your eyes and try to understand the aromas of the wine, and see if they seem familiar to you"
We did not grow up in the same environment, so how could we possibly have the same olfactory memory?
Besides, there's no international standard when it comes to taste.
Trying to get a person who loves "Prahok" (fermented fish paste) and Durian (smelly fruit) to catch the "violet hint" inside a glass of Malbec is a tough challenge.
So why don't you eat Prahok and Durian first, before you think your nose is better than theirs?
