You F**K my Wine??

I like to be adventurous with wine. Hence, it often happens that I ask the sommelier to pick the wine himself, hoping for a nice discovery.

Well, unfortunately the surprise is not always good. Especially when the sommelier that you put your good trust into, “randomly”  brings the most expensive wine from the list.

Yes, sorry, “most expensive” does not always mean that you’re going to love it. Especially if it’s not the right match to your dinner.

8 years in Asia, immersed into Buddhist spirituality, don’t seem enough to lower my frustration when this happens.

How should we face this kind of situation?

1/ return the wine?
if the wine has no fault, it’s hard to do so.

2/ Never go back to that place ever again?
well, just for the fact that the wine was not right on that particular evening.... it would be a big punishment

3/ tell the sommelier that he sucks?
maybe he loves the wine himself! we can’t all have the same taste.

4/ cry and leave the place?
if you’ve taken drama classes, you can try.

I think the best way to handle this is to simply let the shameful culprit know that it was not your “dream wine” (not mentioning the bottle cost...). But first, give yourself 15 minutes, to calm down before you say so, and explain why you would personally have chosen another wine. Di-plo-ma-ti-cal-ly.

And cross fingers that the next round of drinks will be “on the house”.
